Such joyful colours.  Plumage, in orange and fuchsia, is by Woodchip and Magnolia, a husband and wife team who set up their own studio in 2016 with the aim of banishing said woodchip and magnolia!  Plumage is available in six colourways.  It never ceases to amaze me the different vibe you get by changing a colourway, from soft and subtle, to full on statement walls.

Crane Fonda, in coral, by Divine Savages is on Amelia’s current wish list for her new party room.  The Crane comes in 7 colourways, but the best bit is fabric in velvet or cotton, cushions, lampshades, and even a shower curtain.  How fabulous is that?  As they say in their blurb, ‘great British design with our signature divine and savage twist’.

How gorgeous is this emerald green?  I have a soft spot for greens, and this really is a delicious wallpaper.  Not very descriptive, perhaps, but that’s how I feel about it.  Cranes in Flight wallpaper is from Harlequin in six colourways and would look fabulous on a ceiling.

When is a zebra not a zebra?  When its candy pink and green.  This abstract zebra print wallpaper is from Lust Home, an independent British online home décor brand that produces reasonably priced paint and wallpaper in dazzling colours and patterns.  Perfect for the Miami deco look to bring sunshine into your home.

Ubud Tropic wallpaper by Graham & Brown is a lush tropical scene inspired by the Ubud Monkey Forest in Bali.  In vibrant blues and greens these mischievous monkeys bring a smile to your face.  Graham & Brown also produce paints that tone perfectly with their colourful wallpapers, making it simple for you to get the right match.

You need a big wall to appreciate the stunning Daintree Palm Blush wallpaper by Graham & Brown.  The background to the paper has a fabric look effect with a pearlescent finish, which gives it a lovely textural effect.  And with a perfectly partnered paint selection, they take the headache out of creating the perfect scheme, plus 4 colourways to choose from.

My ultimate favourite and a huge contender in my ongoing renovation of my home is, Bengale in paprika, by Manuel Canovas. It’s a beautifully rendered toile design depicting an Indian scene in the time of the Raj.  A tropical jungle filled with elephants, tigers, and Moghul palaces, it really is a delight to let your eyes rove over the design, picking out the story.  Colefax and Fowler have a stunning range of toiles with different stories depicted, and in the most luscious colourways.

Bella wallpaper in green, by I Love Wallpaper is a stunning art deco design for maximum impact.  The simplicity of the fan design would make an amazing backdrop for serious pattern clashes in your soft furnishings.  I Love Wallpaper is a family run business with an exciting range of wallpaper at seriously bargain prices.  Bella is only £16 a roll.

Dazzling or what?  Hide and Seek wallpaper in red and pink, by Lust Home, is a brave and bold move for the fearless.  Seriously fun and vibrant.  Did you know a group of zebras is most commonly called a dazzle of zebras, named for the motion dazzle effect created by running zebras?  I rather like that, and certainly appropriate for this wallpaper.

Pampas wallpaper, in off white and azalea, by House of Hackney is a fabulous depiction of banana leaves, ferns and grasses in a saturated colour that envelopes you in a tropical paradise.  And six delicious colourways to choose from.  House of Hackney are committed to helping conserve natural ecosystems and threatened habitats by their partnership with World Land Trust conservation charity.

Have you always been creative and can you tell us a bit about your journey to becoming an artist?

I always wanted to be an artist but my ‘sensible’ head always told me that is impossible to make into a paying career, so once I left school I went straight into retail and kept my artwork as a hobby. It wasn’t until I started my Instagram account @bland_design and posted photos of my home and decor that found my audience and it gave me the confidence to try and turn it into a business.

Why did you decide to specialise in gilding?

I ended up specialising in gilding by accident really. I was desperate to give my kitchen a face lift but couldn’t afford a new one, so working with what I had already I decided to use gold leaf and resin to create the brass worktops I’d been swooning over. When I posted about it online I started getting inquiries about bespoke worktops and tables which was amazing because I hadn’t planned for it to be a product I’d sell.

Your murals are such grand and striking pieces of art, do you ever feel daunted by the challenge when you start a project?

I’m always nervous when designing a new mural, it’s only once I actually start painting that I finally relax and get into it. I work with a rage of different artistic styles and designs which is really challenging, I end up doing dozens of rough sketches that go in the bin before I start to feel happy with my designs. Some of my work is freehand drawing as well, which has its own challenges when working on a large scale, having to keep stepping back to check it all looks right!

Your work was debuted on the final of Interior Design Masters, where you were commissioned by Siobhan Murphy to create a gorgeous, gilded crane mural. Can you tell us a bit more about that experience?

Siobhan has become a great friend of mine and I was honoured to be asked to paint a mural for the final of the show. It came totally out of the blue because they only get a week to plan their schemes so I had to reshuffle some of my work to be able to do it but I’m so glad I did. It was easily the most terrifying thing I’ve done in my career so far, I’m used to filming my work for Instagram but that’s just me and my camera… Not an entire production team! We only had 3 days to complete the project which was tough, not only did I paint the mural but I also gilded the vaulted ceiling in the hallway of the villa. Since then Siobhan and I have worked on a bunch of other projects in her home, and plenty more to come!

It’s incredible to think that Daniel’s journey began with a kitchen tabletop, some gold leaf, a pot of resin and a large dose of creativity! We’re delighted to hear he has more work in the pipeline with Siobhan. We can’t wait to see the results from this fabulous duo!

If you have followed my previous post’s on my home renovation you will know that it’s all being done on a bit of a budget.  Another year here and then I think we will be moving on to something bigger for a long-term project, so how to inject some grandeur without spending too much is the question.  Thinking outside the box, a stencil seemed the perfect answer for the missing bedroom ceiling rose.

I fell in love with this ceiling stencil design from The Stencil Library but needed it to fit around my ceiling light.  I emailed The Stencil Library and they were really helpful and customized the design to fit.  Also, and this is the shocking bit, they actually rang me to give me a few tips and explain how to do a repeat stencil.  What great customer service!  I have to add here that it wasn’t gifted, and they didn’t know I would be posting a blog about it.  I also used their paint, which is a really nice gold, and gave good coverage so I only needed one coat.

I’m so pleased with the result, and it wasn’t actually that difficult to do.  I remember stencils from my home as a child, as my mum, Jacqui was a big fan in the 90’s for adding decoration to any available surface.  Of course, Jacqui’s stencils were all about the flowers, as always!  It’s such a great way to create pattern and interest, very effectively, without spending a lot of money.

This circles stencil above is an amazing one for a floor to replicate the look of ceramic tiles. Or a leopard print design, which comes in different size stencils depending on what surface you want to stencil. Or if you really want to really make a statement I love the crane design for your walls. If you have the time and the patience, stencils are a great way to create the look of wallpaper at a fraction of the cost.

Or how about a crocodile design. The Stencil Library have shown it here in a large design on a wall but it would also look great as a small-scale design on a desk or table for a moc croc effect.

These are just a few ideas from The Stencil Library to hopefully get you feeling inspired.  It’s not only a cheaper way to add decoration, it also enables you to customize with colour and design to your own taste.  And if you are a beginner to stenciling, then Stencil Library are so knowledgeable and helpful that you can’t go wrong.  What do you think to my gold ceiling rose?

I’ve always painted my radiators to match the wall colour in a bid to make them disappear, but after perusing these beauties from BestHeating maybe it’s time to embrace radiators and have them take centre stage. I certainly won’t change all of them but the more prominent ones need to become a thing of beauty, I feel. If you can get the architecture of a space right the rest seems to flow, and that’s the beauty of these radiators. They create an impact that you can work from.

And this is the beauty that has me lusting for new radiators. Who could fail to be seduced by its alluring bronze finish? My door handles and light sockets are aged brass so feel this is one has my name on it.

Paint colours seems such a trivial subject at the moment but maybe for some of us, finances allowing, it’s a chance to forget what is happening and rejoice in our homes.  That said and moving swiftly on, our 5 favourite paint colours for 2020 are tried and tested by us, bar Lauzuli, by Zoffany, but as this is the paint colour of Sophie Robinson’s hallway, I think we are in safe hands with that one. Pine Needle, by Dulux, has got to be one of our favourite dark colours.  it’s been the backdrop for our photography for a while now as we love the way the rich green interacts with our vibrant pieces.  Green is one of the on trend paint colours for 2020, but to my mind you can’t go wrong with green, whatever the trends say.  What’s a home without green?

Sicilian Summer 4, by Dulux.  Just the name is enough to make it desirable.  But seriously it’s a calming, warm neutral, and the only pale colour in our favourite paint colours for 2020.  So that’s saying something as to how much we like it.

Plimsoll, by Paint & Paper Library, is a strong vibrant blue that changes dramatically according to the light levels in a room.  From a rich moody colour in a dark room to a rich jewel colour in strong light.  My sitting room (which is quite dark) is painted in Plimsoll because I find it warmer and richer than grey.  Paired with a mustard chair and raspberry pink velvet sofa, the room glows.

Wow, is all I can say to this image of Sophie Robinson’s hallway.  Lazuli, by Zoffany, makes a dramatic entry to Sophie’s home, and what you would expect from a self-confessed colour lover.  A brave and spirited colour for a dynamic and vivacious home.

What do you think to our 5 favourite paint colours for 2020?  Colour sets off a personal and emotive reaction within each of us, and being as the vast majority of us are now contained within our own four walls, a subject a lot of us are contemplating.  As a way to think into the future for happier times, or as a little light relief amidst the chaos.

Fresh, exciting and very Miami Beach meets tropical.  Mint green and blush pink is very much on trend for the coming year, perfect for a bright breezy zing of colour.  The Jungle Palmes wallpaper, by Caselio is £35 per roll. So not a bank breaker.

4. Bonnie & Bold – Banana Leaf

The Banana Leaf wallpaper, by Bonnie & Bold, is the striking option for those of you with a sense of adventure.  It comes in different lengths and widths, and they also offer a bespoke service.

5. Emma J Shipley – Kruger Wallpaper

Kruger wallpaper, by British designer Emma J Shipley for Clarke & Clarke is another adventurous design. Shipley is known for her stunning designs that make a bold statement.  I love the imagery of this one but if the orange is too striking for you it is available in a range of subtler tones.   At £51 per roll it’s a mid-price range paper.

6. World of Wallpaper – Congo Geometric Wallpaper Pink Holden

The Congo Geometric wallpaper, by World of Wallpaper is beautifully rendered in soft pink and green with a rose gold trellis design.  Exotic birds and lizards climb up the palm fronds for a hint of the curious.  Also available in a matte black background for an intense and dramatic room scheme.

7. Albany – Flamingos

Fun, quirky and bound to bring a smile to your face.  From the Albany Wow 2017 collection this is a steal at £18.98 a roll!  It’s a vinyl wallpaper so a bit more user friendly than most.

8. Graham & Brown – Yasuni Midnight Wallaper

Intense, moody and full of drama for a bold statement. Yasuni Midnight, by Graham & Brown is a striking tropical wallpaper in luscious shades of green and blue on a midnight base.  I liked the fact that they recommend paint shades to co-ordinate with the wallpaper, which makes matching up a lot easier.  A good tip on the review section was to darken the ends of the rolls before unwrapping them to prevent white lines on the joins when pasting.  At £40 per roll it’s in the mid price range.

9. Happy Wall – Palms Gold Cali Vibes 8 Wall Mural

A slightly different option here as Palms Gold is a mural from Happy Wall, so you order it to fit the size of your wall.  A very large design that would be amazing for a big space. Such a sense of grandeur and elegance, a pared down design in calming tones of gold and white.  But at £48 per m2 it’s not a cheap option!

10. Cole and Son – Palm Jungle

And last, but not least, Palm Jungle, by Cole & Son, in my garden room.  I love this wallpaper more each day – for its sense of calm, for its beautiful tones of green, and for its ability to bring the outdoors in.  What more can I say?  And yes, I did pay for it (at £100 per roll, not cheap), so I am completely without bias here.

So, that’s our round up of tropical wallpapers for you, from Art Deco inspired to a fantasy world.  Whether you are looking for the subtleness of waving palm fronds or a full on exotic animal experience there is plenty of designs out there.  If you like a design but not the colourway then each design is available in different colourways, which dramatically alters the look.  I hope this post inspires you invite tropical wallpapers into your home.

Black half tile £109.95 per m2 | Gold metallic half tile £865 per m2

We’ll start with the most amazing, glamorous, opulent tiles imaginable – who would have thought half tiles (or metro tiles as I know them, or subway tiles, as they call them in America) could look so glam? I’m completely blown away by these gold and black metro tiles laid in a herringbone pattern. Such a fab way to lay them and a great idea that’s easily translatable to other, more affordable, colour ways.

Gold metro tiles again but laid straight, with the addition of a gold skirting tile and gold moulding. Oh, so sexy, and so pricey – £865 per m2! Not everybody’s thing of course, but what an impact, and so decadent and ritzy, and reflective so they create a really dazzling effect and help to make a room feel larger. But sadly they are out of price bracket for most of us!

I love these Victorian green tiles from their ‘Field Tile’ range, although I have to say the styling is so fab that you can’t help but fall in love with them. I can just picture a tropical garden room/conservatory with these on the walls and oodles of plants and rattan furniture, and at £99.95 per m2 an absolute snip compared to the glamorous gold divas. I also love the skirting tile which really gives a polished finish. Because of the nature of the copper-based glaze these tiles are not suitable for wet areas though.

Pettina ceramic tile £79.95 per m2

The Pettina tile comes from the Palazzo collection – inspired by the glistening white marble of grand palatial buildings in Italy. Although the Pettina has a real art deco vibe to it, gloriously patterned yet gloriously simple. The large size of the tiles (300mm x 600mm) gives a very clean simple finish to a room. Again, a more affordable option at £79.95 per m2.

Leopard print tiles – how fabulous, and so on trend but discreet enough to have longevity. There are 4 designs from the ‘Call of the Wild’ collection so if you have a fancy for a zebra print tile you know where to get it from. And again, their styling is fabulous, not quite the Audenza aesthetic but I love it just the same. I also like the idea of a centre panel of contrasting tiles to create definition.

Hothouse tropical ceramic tile £79.95 per m2

These Hothouse tiles are a matt glazed ceramic tile that really set the tropical scene. You can go 2 ways with these tiles, either a light delicate touch with just whispers of green, or full on tropical by accentuating the greenness with the fabulously rich green half tiles complementing them, or painted green walls, of course.

This is just a small selection that we picked to showcase Original Style Tiles but do go on their website for a browse. Their range is truly stunning with a fabulous blog full of inspiring ideas. When I finally get round to redoing my ensuite bathroom I want the gold ones, I wish!

Obviously 10 animal print fabrics to lust over is only a taster of what’s out there but still, it’s a tasty selection to start you off with and get you exploring.

[Gifted*] Let’s start with a stunner, so says Amelia who has chosen this one (and which has very kindly been gifted) for her sitting room roman blinds in a fabulous cerise colour – all of which will be revealed in a future blog post when Amelia finally finishes the room! Cheetah by Mathew Williamson for Osborne & Little is a small-scale pattern that lets the colours do the shouting, available in a choice of seven colours, and perfect for when you don’t want the pattern to dominate the room. Osborne & Little is a well-loved British brand known for their collaboration with high end designers.

Inky Leopard Velvet Fabric, by Avalana Design, is a beautifully rendered ink and watercolour print that glows in navy, sapphire and smoke grey velvet. Avalana is a new Manchester based brand launched in summer 2018, with all the products made in the UK. It’s always nice to support small independent companies and it also means you are getting something that bit more exclusive.

This Giraffe print fabric by Charlotte Jade, from their Into the Wild Collection, is a bold design that comes in 2 colourways. It’s always easier to visualize a fabric in your own home when you can see it in situ on a product. Again another British brand, founded by artist Charlotte O’Reilly in 2015, with all products made in the UK.

If you are looking for a design that features exotic animals as opposed to just the pattern, then Faunacation by Divine Savages is a hot contender, featuring lush tropical foliage and big cats. Bold and brave, but then with a name like Divine Savages you would expect something a little different! Founded in London in 2016 by husbands Jamie Watkins and Tom Kennedy, they bring a twist of the unexpected to interiors.

Gosh, what a deliciously gorgeous chair – much more inspiring than a fabric swatch! From Rebecca J Mills’, ‘Falling for – Magic’ is in a soft feel velvet, in subtle shades of blue and pink, that drapes beautifully and is available as fabric, lamp shade and cushions. A small British brand with all products made in the UK.

Ocelot Noir by Clarke & Clarke is a fabulous print that this photo does not do justice to. Amelia has a sample of this and it really is far more desirable in the flesh. Available in several colourways, it has a lovely sheen to the finish that shouts to be stroked. Also, it looks quite similar to a House of Hackney print, but at half the price it’s a more affordable option.

Another Charlotte Jade print, this time featuring thoughtful looking zebras. Not just the preserve of children anymore these wonderful creatures would look amazing on an armchair for a really eye-catching statement piece, although not for the more conservative amongst you!

Blush Pink Giraffe Velvet by Anna Hayman is a beautifully reinterpreted giraffe print from a small design company that are happy to adapt either the scale, or palette of a design, to suit your interior needs. Anna creates prints the old fashioned way, using linocuts which are then digitally printed. She describes her work as “sixties cum thirties with a cool chic edge”.

Onda Fushcia is an exciting reinterpretation of the zebra stripe from Clarke & Clarke. Available in 13 colourways there has to be one here to wet your appetite for an animal print.

House of Hackney doesn’t need an introduction really, does it? It’s a brand that inspires and delights, at a cost! ‘Wild Card’, a reimagining of leopard print looks so cool as matching wallpaper and curtains – a great way to have a small scale pattern base for exotic and original interiors. Load on the pattern with furniture and accessories for drama, or keep it simple and monochromatic for sleekness.

So, what do you think of animal print fabrics? Is it lust or loath for you? Certainly a trend that requires some subtlety, I think. Maybe you’re ahead of the game and you have a window, or a chair or two, in animal prints. I’m limited with windows as I have shutters at the front and fairly new roman blinds at the back, but I couldn’t resist a few velvet leopard print cushions to jazz up my gorgeous green sofa. With so many extravagant designs out there, happy animal print hunting!

And that’s why I agreed to review ‘Love Colour: Choosing Colours to Live With’ by Anna Starmer.   To be honest, we are quite often asked if we’d like to be gifted a copy of a book to review on the blog, but we never accept unless it’s something we think our readers will genuinely love. I’m personally always on the lookout for good books on colour and the front cover of this one drew me in instantly with its glorious colour combination.

Before we dig in, I wanted to just take a moment to apologise that we haven’t posted for a couple of weeks.  As you can imagine, as retailers, this time of year goes just a little bit crazy at Audenza HQ, but this year has been particularly so! We will be posting a fabulous gift guide in the next week or so, but after that, I imagine in order to help retain our sanity, that will be our last post of 2019.

Now then, on to the book review.  The author of this stunning book, Anna Starmer, is an international trend and colour forecaster who has worked with some of the biggest names out there, so who better to guide us through the myriad choices we have.  The book is a mouth-watering display of colour and its transformative effect on our lives – and not only that there is in-depth analysis of colour and how to go about choosing colour for different rooms in the home from a personal viewpoint.  With every photograph of a colour scheme, there are colour bars that show you the proportions of colour used to make the scheme successful, and the reasons why she uses the different tones in the accent colours.

Every colour has a grid of colour inspiration from everyday objects and nature, to further wet your appetite and help you understand and collate your colour preferences.

This image is taken from the front of the book and really resonated with me for its bold and vibrant use of colour.

The above two images are both taken from the section on pink, to give you an idea on how comprehensively Anna deals with colour – you couldn’t get two more different vibes from these images.

Another striking combination for the adventurous, this time from the blue section but again with different tones of pink.  I imagine by now you’re getting a feeling of which colour palettes I’m naturally drawn to!

This stunning photograph is from the red section and I have fallen deeply in love with that Cole & Son wallpaper.

My final selection is a little different, but beautifully shows how the classic combination of black and white, can be given a modern twist with the use of pattern and texture.

That’s just a taster of the book, and I have chosen the stronger palettes as that’s what draws me, but there are also sections on white and neutral colour schemes.  Whether you are a novice at colour or an old hand there is so much here to inspire, and it encourages you to be experimental.  There is also a handy pull-out booklet of swatches of key colours from every chapter for you to take with you to the paint and fabric stores.  To sum it up, I was kindly gifted a copy to review, but I love it so much I’ve bought another copy for a friend!

One of the cheapest, and easiest options for brass kitchen splashbacks, is from Ikea, the beloved home of DIY’ers everywhere. Double sided panels, one side brass coloured, the reverse in a stainless steel colour, specifically for use as kitchen splashbacks. The panels are glued to the wall surface to create a flat surface that is resistant to heat, water, dirt and grease (but not suitable for gas hobs). Effective and cheap!

Not strictly gold this one – more of a coppery gold, but with a deliciously textured surface to add more twinkle.  The panels can be glued onto existing tiles so are a very cost effective way of updating your kitchen walls.  If using behind the hob though you will need to cover with a glass splashback to protect the faux tin from heat.

Now this is a seriously luxe range by Quirky Interiors that just screams quality, at a price, for the discerning.  Wall tiles, metal panels – in fact anything you want, in any size or any colour.  It’s completely bespoke so never mind brass splashbacks you can have your kitchen cupboards in brass should you desire.  And it’s a small independent business who specialise in this type of work, which usually means you can be assured of personal and knowledgeable service.  Just take a look at their recent projects page if you want to be inspired.

Another luxe range and a little bit of a twist on the usual brass kitchen splashbacks, is from a company called Original Style.  The Cleopatra range is made from glass with a layer of real gold leaf behind it for the seriously glamorous.  From wet rooms, to kitchens, to anywhere you want a glittering wall of gold.  High spec that can contend with all that water and everyday life can throw at it.  This company have an extensive range of indoor and outdoor tiles to whet your appetite, and a seriously good blog that inspires and informs.

Now obviously the Ikea option is far cheaper than the others, and if you’re on a tight budget, then it’s a great choice. But if you can possibly stretch to any of the more luxe options, then the finish will be worth it’s weight in….

Tempted? If money was no object, I would be seriously tempted by brass kitchen cupboards – how deliciously different is that?  I wouldn’t need to worry about paint chips anymore haha!  Any other areas you would use this?
