First up is yellow and black.  A daring duo but if done well it’s a clean, refreshing mix that’s sophisticated and elegant.  Mainly black and white with splashes of yellow for zing, and gold accessories to contrast the black and add sparkle.

You can’t possibly go wrong with pink and green.  It’s a timeless colour combo that is restful and harmonious, and always feels like you are bringing the outside in.  One of my favourites for that very reason.  Soft and subtle, or full on colour saturation, it’s always going to work.

 I always think of a red, black and green colour combination as being grown up, and it reminds me of studies or snugs.  Warm, cosy end enveloping, but also dignified and distinguished.

Pink and grey together can be quite sombre and with a vintage vibe, but with a touch of the romantic.  But add that dazzle of yellow and you have a striking and modern colour combo that can’t be ignored.

A striking ‘look at me’ colour combo that can’t be ignored.  This is Amelia’s sitting room in her previous house and still a favourite.  It’s essential pink and green with a dash of mustard yellow.  Can’t go wrong!

Black and white, with the addition of pink is a restful harmonious scheme that never fails.  If pink is your favourite colour but you don’t want it to look too feminine, then the black and white sharpens it up for a more considered design.

Green and mustard yellow has the same inside outside feel as pink and green, but a sharper less feminine combination.  Always harmonious whether you go light or dark.

Pink and teal is essentially a swankier version of pink and green – more chic shall we say.  Less soft and more snappy.  Perfect for this swish bar.

Pink, green and yellow has always been one of my favourite interior colour palette combinations.  I’ve tried to deviate over the years and broaden my horizons but in my latest home revamp I’ve reverted to type and feel so much more in tune with my home.  Do you have a favourite interior colour combination you find you are drawn to time and again, despite all the choices out there? Seeing as Leicester is now the persecuted minority by being plunged back into lockdown Amelia has given up all hope of the decorator coming and is looking at ways to decorate her spare bedroom quickly and cheaply herself.  I remember well the craze for stencilling and rag rolling in the 90’s, and enjoyed coming up with ideas for different ways to decorate my walls.  These unusual painted wall ideas are a continuation of that creative drive to beautify our homes.

This has to be my favourite – I just love the contrast of the linear shelving with the circular paint effect, and the fabulous gradation of colour.  Helps its pink, of course!  This paint effect could be used in place of artwork as it creates such an impact.

I love wooden stairs far more than carpeted and this is such a good way of making a feature with colour.  Providing your stairs are in good nick.

A fabulous way to make a feature of your bed in your own individual style, and when you fancy a change just repaint.  You could paint a headboard to match your bedlinen so the bed takes centre stage in the room in a dramatic way.

A great way to add colour and interest without adding pattern, and it also gives a contemporary feel to a room.  Kate from Mad About The House talks about the effect it has on the proportions of a room, and good info on the technique of painting using masking tape.

Colour Pop Door Frame

Simple, seductive and fabulous.  Just one small pop of colour adds so much vibrancy to a very simple scheme.  It’s the perfect way to add colour without overwhelming a room, and because it’s only a small area you can be really brave and experiment with your colour choice.  The bonus is you can repaint easily and cheaply when you fancy a change.

An ingenious way to create pattern and colour without overwhelming a room.  There are so many options here for you to play about with such as diagonal lines with circles and contrasting colours with tonal colours.  Half the fun is the playing about with shape and colour to create your own design, and easily painted over if you don’t like it or when you want a change.

I’m not sure how you do this but if you have the skills it looks amazing.  There are lots of DIY instructions online for painting ombre walls, but it’s best to use two colours that blend well together.  The Spruce gives some helpful advice re colour choice.

Contrasting Colour Block Shelving

How to make simple shelving look dynamic and vibrant.  It’s also a great way to create visual impact on a wall you want to make a feature of, like a chimney breast if you haven’t got a fireplace.  A cheap way to make a very striking focal point.

If you tried to describe this bathroom with half a wall painted yellow and a quarter of a circle in yellow on another wall it would sound exceedingly odd, but it works.

All these unusual painted wall ideas have one thing in common – individuality.  That’s the beauty of paint effects, you make it your own, and have so much fun in the process coming up with ways to add character to your space.  And a great way to use up all those half tins of paint we’ve all got knocking about.  This trend is a hit with me and I’m planning what to do in my sewing room to give it a revamp.  Will have to wait for lockdown to end though as my days of painting walls are definitely over.

1. Osborne & Little – Palmaria

The Palmaria wallpaper, by Osborne & Little, is a beautiful large scale palm leaf design in a subtle bronze and teal colourway.  Perfect for adding richness and texture to a room.  Named after the island of Palmaria in the Ligurian sea.  You can almost feel the warm sea breeze!

2. Laura Hyden – Cheetah Wallpaper Mustard

The Cheetah wallpaper by Laura Hyden, for Graduate Collections is a richly coloured exotic wallpaper, perfect for those of you with a taste of the extraordinary.  A pricey one at £125 per roll, but if you want to set a tropical scene well worth it.

3. Caselio – Jungle Palmes Wallpaper

Fresh, exciting and very Miami Beach meets tropical.  Mint green and blush pink is very much on trend for the coming year, perfect for a bright breezy zing of colour.  The Jungle Palmes wallpaper, by Caselio is £35 per roll. So not a bank breaker.

4. Bonnie & Bold – Banana Leaf

The Banana Leaf wallpaper, by Bonnie & Bold, is the striking option for those of you with a sense of adventure.  It comes in different lengths and widths, and they also offer a bespoke service.

5. Emma J Shipley – Kruger Wallpaper

Kruger wallpaper, by British designer Emma J Shipley for Clarke & Clarke is another adventurous design. Shipley is known for her stunning designs that make a bold statement.  I love the imagery of this one but if the orange is too striking for you it is available in a range of subtler tones.   At £51 per roll it’s a mid-price range paper.

6. World of Wallpaper – Congo Geometric Wallpaper Pink Holden

The Congo Geometric wallpaper, by World of Wallpaper is beautifully rendered in soft pink and green with a rose gold trellis design.  Exotic birds and lizards climb up the palm fronds for a hint of the curious.  Also available in a matte black background for an intense and dramatic room scheme.

7. Albany – Flamingos

Fun, quirky and bound to bring a smile to your face.  From the Albany Wow 2017 collection this is a steal at £18.98 a roll!  It’s a vinyl wallpaper so a bit more user friendly than most.

8. Graham & Brown – Yasuni Midnight Wallaper

Intense, moody and full of drama for a bold statement. Yasuni Midnight, by Graham & Brown is a striking tropical wallpaper in luscious shades of green and blue on a midnight base.  I liked the fact that they recommend paint shades to co-ordinate with the wallpaper, which makes matching up a lot easier.  A good tip on the review section was to darken the ends of the rolls before unwrapping them to prevent white lines on the joins when pasting.  At £40 per roll it’s in the mid price range.

9. Happy Wall – Palms Gold Cali Vibes 8 Wall Mural

A slightly different option here as Palms Gold is a mural from Happy Wall, so you order it to fit the size of your wall.  A very large design that would be amazing for a big space. Such a sense of grandeur and elegance, a pared down design in calming tones of gold and white.  But at £48 per m2 it’s not a cheap option!

10. Cole and Son – Palm Jungle

And last, but not least, Palm Jungle, by Cole & Son, in my garden room.  I love this wallpaper more each day – for its sense of calm, for its beautiful tones of green, and for its ability to bring the outdoors in.  What more can I say?  And yes, I did pay for it (at £100 per roll, not cheap), so I am completely without bias here.

So, that’s our round up of tropical wallpapers for you, from Art Deco inspired to a fantasy world.  Whether you are looking for the subtleness of waving palm fronds or a full on exotic animal experience there is plenty of designs out there.  If you like a design but not the colourway then each design is available in different colourways, which dramatically alters the look.  I hope this post inspires you invite tropical wallpapers into your home.

Soft, feminine and deliciously dreamy. The beautiful bathroom is by @Oxfordone

As we all know preparing a colour palette before beginning an interior project is the proper way to go about it.  That said, I’ve never done one in my life.   Shameful admission I know, but never fear, Amelia is a great fan of them so we have an expert on hand.  Every room in her new home has a colour palette and mood board before work begins.  It’s certainly the way to avoid mistakes, and to gather your thoughts in a coherent way.  As my thoughts have never been coherent, would it work for me?  Who knows, but I’ve promised Amelia the next room I redo will have its very own colour palette to start with, so we will see how that works out!

What do you think to Amelia’s tropical colour palette inspiration?  I think if you are unsure of how you want a room to look, and are scared of making mistakes, a colour palette, along with a mood board, has to be a fail-safe way of bringing ideas together and marshalling your thoughts.  That said, I’m possibly too old to change my ways, but I really am going to try it next time.

Hollie has nudged me to say that the time-honoured way of doing colour palettes i.e. paint samples, fabric swatches and magazine images is still the way forward for most of us.  Apparently, I was implying we could all use photoshop etc to achieve the samples Amelia’s way.  But, being a complete technophobe, it never occurred to me to use a computer for such things.  Perish the thought!

Leopard Print as an Accent

Leopard print as an accent pattern works well because of its contrast value. You’re not asking it to tone in, you’re asking it to be bold and vibrant. It’s a pattern, but a ritzy pattern that will also be that bit different and stand out, so even used minimally it will always have impact.

We can all equate to this and it’s the simplest way to use leopard print in your home if you are nervous about bold moves.

A rich, vibrant scheme with just a dash of leopard for contrast and pattern. It adds a slightly exotic element to this scheme and a hint of glamour.

“I think the issue with it is, you have to treat it delicately. You have to handle leopard print with care. It’s like over doing it on the spice when you are cooking – just enough and it brings all the other flavours to the fore – too much and it will overpower the entire dish, making it inedible. Balance is key. To me, leopard print shouldn’t overwhelm the space. It shouldn’t be the first thing that jumps out at you.” Kimberly Duran, interior design blogger at Swoon Worthy

Kimberly’s use of leopard print makes a bold statement in a pink and yellow bedroom. It adds pattern, texture and an element of fun to a harmonious scheme. Again, it is just a little dash of it that creates the impact. The yellow in the cushions picks up on the bed head and the contrasting pattern creates a tension with the bedlinen to stop it looking too pretty.

Maximalist Leopard Print

But not everyone wants leopard print to play a small part in their home, it can work just as well in a much more maximalist scheme but it’s a brave move, and it’s your personal bravado that will carry it through. If you compare fashion with interiors it’s the sense of style, and owning the look, that makes it work.

“I tend to repeat themes throughout the house (whether that be colour or pattern) to almost dilute the impact of one really big statement so the exaggerated use of this print doesn’t seem shocking. I think leopard works best against a dark backdrop. Why this room works is the different scale of leopard print patterns to create tension. The dark woodwork and floor pick up on the darkness in the leopard print designs, with the orange stools picking up on the wallpaper background colour. It’s a very harmonious scheme, but so unexpected and original with the added touch of floral pattern.

Abstract Leopard Print

If you’re concerned about leopard print looking ‘tacky’, Marcie Kobernus recommends to “try painting it yourself or creating a more abstract look with different colours. Perhaps just keep clear of the fluffy fake leopard fabric, but saying that, if that’s what you want, it’s your home so just embrace it.” Marcie Kobernus, Columnist for Reclaim Magazine and founder of Marcie K Designs

If you like a full-on maximalist look, don’t be afraid to mix other patterns with leopard print. Contrasting patterns should vary in scale and colour for real impact and a sense of excitement. In that sense leopard print is very easy to mix with other patterns because it’s such a simple design.

A real maximalist delight for lovers of pattern. The leopard print table is a calming oasis that works well in this opulent scheme. Taking leopard away from realistic colours creates a more abstract look to it. The black and white in the leopard print picks up on the wallpaper colours but contrasts with excitement, verve and drama – for the drama queens amongst you.

Here this homeowner uses the pattern of leopard print, in a black and white colour way. This gives a totally different feel to the room, lighter and brighter, and certainly more feminine. The leopard print wallpaper is more about a pattern than an animal print. Contrasted with the pink and white, and plenty of texture, for a stylishly girly bedroom.

Sally nails it here, it’s all about how much you love it. How to use leopard print in your home comes down to your sense of style, be it extravagant and maximalist or as an accent pattern. Because it is just a pattern. A pattern that you either embrace or not. So, use it as an accent as you would any other pattern, or if it’s something you love go the whole way and embrace it – with panache and no apologies. Like the fashion icons!

I, being the try hard, trendy that I was, wore trousers that had a skirt built-in.  Jollied by my mothers assurances that it was about to become ALL the rage, I trotted into school that day with a smile on my face, confident that this look was about to propel me to seriously new levels of cool (I say new, meaning I was most definitely not cool to start with).  It took all of about 5 seconds on walking into the classroom for me to realise that I had made a grave mistake.

The key point about this quote, is that my version of ‘boring’, may well be very different to yours.

Well, my friends, that was my first lesson in trends.  Unless, you’re already cool, trying to start your own trend, with the hope of it catching on, is simply not going to happen.  You need someone cool (or in the case of the real world, a journo, a blogger, or someone with authority) to catch on to it and then you’ve got a chance at it taking off.

It took me a few years to recover from that non-uniform experience, not just in terms of emotional damage (!!) but also to realise that actually, I didn’t care what other people thought.  I spent most of my early teens dressing like everyone else, EXACTLY like everyone else.  To my mothers despair.  But it must have been a coming of age thing, because when I reached about 17 or 18, I actually stopped caring.  Of course, looking back on it now, I think, “What on earth was I thinking?”, but at the time, I was having fun and experimenting.  In fact, I used to like it when people in Leicester laughed at what I was wearing, it meant I had succeeded in looking different.

Now the point of this story (yes, I am getting to it!), is that exactly the same goes for your decor choices, folks. Design is so subjective and everyone has different tastes. Even one product can be taken and styled in a multitude of different settings to create a completely different look.  You don’t need to feel like you should follow trends. What’s actually important is finding what it is you love and basing your decor decisions around that. [You can read more here: How to Find Your Interiors Style.]

And do you know what we find?  Anyone whose opinion we respect, or for that matter, care about, respects us for having the courage to step out and be different.  Our friends don’t always like what we wear, or what we have in our homes, but they respect us for doing it anyway.

If you’re going to try and style your home hoping that everyone else is going to come in, love it and then do something similar, then you can forget about it.  If you’re doing something different, then just embrace it and know that not everyone who walks in the door is going to like it.  But that’s OKAY.

How boring would life be if everyone looked the same, wore the same thing and styled their houses the same.  Urgh! I couldn’t think of anything worse.   So, if you feel confident enough to try something different, then fantastic, but try to remember my little story about the skirt and trouser combo.  You’ve got to go into it knowing that you might be on your own, but have the confidence in your own mind and creativity to stick with it anyway.

To achieve the Hollywood Glam look in your home without veering into the pastiche, which brings on nervous laughter in your visitors (or partner), there are a few key points to remember which I will get to, but the main thing to remember is it’s your home, your style, so stop worrying about what anyone else thinks.  That’s certainly our motto at Audenza as we three have varying styles and tastes! Here’s the key things you need to get to the essence of the style…

Gold– Hollywood was the ‘Golden Age’ so glam it up with gold or brass, shiny or matt, for a rich extravagance.

Texture– Feathers, fur, velvet and silk juxtaposed with shiny hard surfaces gives a sharper contrast that makes each piece sing with vibrancy.

Jewel Colours– Ah the wonders of jewel colours.  Always a favourite of mine whatever the style.  Richness, opulence, warmth, glamour – it invokes them all.  Gold, red, emerald green, luscious pink, lapis lazuli – not altogether of course, pick a couple and use as accents in furniture, cushions and accessories, but not too much pattern so you keep the focus clear.

Faux Fur Gold Stool

Curvy Shapes- Curvaceous furniture is sexy, which is the essence of Hollywood glamour.  Think low slung shell backed chairs, round velvet stools and circular tables.

Luxe Materials- Everything needs to be luxe.  It doesn’t have to be luxe price, just look like it is.  Paint old furniture with a shiny lacquered black finish and add gold hardware, no room here for shabby chic furniture.  Add velvet, silk and fur cushions for an extravagant look.

Reflections- Mirrors and mirrored surfaces are plentiful and make a striking contrast with plush fabrics.  Sunbursts mirrors evoke the era and make a glamorous statement.  Add some seriously ornate statement lighting for maximum reflection and to create wow factor.

Simplicity- Well you have to keep this lot simple or it would turn into a bordello themed décor!  Clear, uncluttered, but with lots of visual impact from each piece.  Don’t forget to add a touch of the exotic in your accessories to add character, charisma and a bit of swagger.

And last, but certainly not least…

Monochrome- Hollie loves monochrome and, although I can appreciate it and am wowed by monochrome interiors, they are too pared back for me.  They have to be paired back as you would get seriously dizzy from too much of this.  Keep to a few pieces of seriously elegant furniture, add a few touches of colour to lift it and accessorize with boldness.

For Hollywood Glam above all think quality not quantity. Let the pieces shine in their own right and create impact.  Each piece should be a star in itself and a wonder to behold.  Well that’s pushing it a bit far but you get the gist.

Blush Hygeia Vase

Pantone, the global colour forecasters, launched Rose Quartz as their 2016 colour of the year (along with serenity blue) and it has been gaining momentum as a strong trend in interiors that is set to continue. Suffice to say I love the colour and think it has a place in interiors whatever your gender. Karen Haller, one of the UK’s best known Applied Colour Psychology experts has this to say about the trend for pink,

‘For whatever reason, the Millennials are a generation who care far less about what people think. They don’t see pink as being weak or needy or ‘girly’ – they see it as a vibrant colour and one amongst many they use to express themselves. They’re not entrenched with the stereotypical beliefs that go along with pink.’

Partnered with green it really is reminiscent of a lush spring day in all its verdant glory, and what an easy way to cheer up your interior décor, and life, come to that. The wall colour is Button, by Little Greene Paint, which is best described as a sort of beigey pink (to my mind anyway) and, although it looks slightly boring on the colour card, gives a lovely warmth to a room.

If bold and fearless colour combos is your thing then Dark Lovage, by Conran Paints, makes a great contrast against hot pink accessories. By keeping to small quantities of the hottest hue you enliven a space without overpowering the room. And quantities of gold add the luxe for a really vibrant décor.

Well that’s me finished with my eulogy to the colour pink – although I’m sure I’ve not finished on the subject for good, not until you dissenters have seen the light anyway!
