Such joyful colours.  Plumage, in orange and fuchsia, is by Woodchip and Magnolia, a husband and wife team who set up their own studio in 2016 with the aim of banishing said woodchip and magnolia!  Plumage is available in six colourways.  It never ceases to amaze me the different vibe you get by changing a colourway, from soft and subtle, to full on statement walls.

Crane Fonda, in coral, by Divine Savages is on Amelia’s current wish list for her new party room.  The Crane comes in 7 colourways, but the best bit is fabric in velvet or cotton, cushions, lampshades, and even a shower curtain.  How fabulous is that?  As they say in their blurb, ‘great British design with our signature divine and savage twist’.

How gorgeous is this emerald green?  I have a soft spot for greens, and this really is a delicious wallpaper.  Not very descriptive, perhaps, but that’s how I feel about it.  Cranes in Flight wallpaper is from Harlequin in six colourways and would look fabulous on a ceiling.

When is a zebra not a zebra?  When its candy pink and green.  This abstract zebra print wallpaper is from Lust Home, an independent British online home décor brand that produces reasonably priced paint and wallpaper in dazzling colours and patterns.  Perfect for the Miami deco look to bring sunshine into your home.

Ubud Tropic wallpaper by Graham & Brown is a lush tropical scene inspired by the Ubud Monkey Forest in Bali.  In vibrant blues and greens these mischievous monkeys bring a smile to your face.  Graham & Brown also produce paints that tone perfectly with their colourful wallpapers, making it simple for you to get the right match.

You need a big wall to appreciate the stunning Daintree Palm Blush wallpaper by Graham & Brown.  The background to the paper has a fabric look effect with a pearlescent finish, which gives it a lovely textural effect.  And with a perfectly partnered paint selection, they take the headache out of creating the perfect scheme, plus 4 colourways to choose from.

My ultimate favourite and a huge contender in my ongoing renovation of my home is, Bengale in paprika, by Manuel Canovas. It’s a beautifully rendered toile design depicting an Indian scene in the time of the Raj.  A tropical jungle filled with elephants, tigers, and Moghul palaces, it really is a delight to let your eyes rove over the design, picking out the story.  Colefax and Fowler have a stunning range of toiles with different stories depicted, and in the most luscious colourways.

Bella wallpaper in green, by I Love Wallpaper is a stunning art deco design for maximum impact.  The simplicity of the fan design would make an amazing backdrop for serious pattern clashes in your soft furnishings.  I Love Wallpaper is a family run business with an exciting range of wallpaper at seriously bargain prices.  Bella is only £16 a roll.

Dazzling or what?  Hide and Seek wallpaper in red and pink, by Lust Home, is a brave and bold move for the fearless.  Seriously fun and vibrant.  Did you know a group of zebras is most commonly called a dazzle of zebras, named for the motion dazzle effect created by running zebras?  I rather like that, and certainly appropriate for this wallpaper.

Pampas wallpaper, in off white and azalea, by House of Hackney is a fabulous depiction of banana leaves, ferns and grasses in a saturated colour that envelopes you in a tropical paradise.  And six delicious colourways to choose from.  House of Hackney are committed to helping conserve natural ecosystems and threatened habitats by their partnership with World Land Trust conservation charity.

1. Osborne & Little – Palmaria

The Palmaria wallpaper, by Osborne & Little, is a beautiful large scale palm leaf design in a subtle bronze and teal colourway.  Perfect for adding richness and texture to a room.  Named after the island of Palmaria in the Ligurian sea.  You can almost feel the warm sea breeze!

2. Laura Hyden – Cheetah Wallpaper Mustard

The Cheetah wallpaper by Laura Hyden, for Graduate Collections is a richly coloured exotic wallpaper, perfect for those of you with a taste of the extraordinary.  A pricey one at £125 per roll, but if you want to set a tropical scene well worth it.

Fresh, exciting and very Miami Beach meets tropical.  Mint green and blush pink is very much on trend for the coming year, perfect for a bright breezy zing of colour.  The Jungle Palmes wallpaper, by Caselio is £35 per roll. So not a bank breaker.

4. Bonnie & Bold – Banana Leaf

The Banana Leaf wallpaper, by Bonnie & Bold, is the striking option for those of you with a sense of adventure.  It comes in different lengths and widths, and they also offer a bespoke service.

5. Emma J Shipley – Kruger Wallpaper

Kruger wallpaper, by British designer Emma J Shipley for Clarke & Clarke is another adventurous design. Shipley is known for her stunning designs that make a bold statement.  I love the imagery of this one but if the orange is too striking for you it is available in a range of subtler tones.   At £51 per roll it’s a mid-price range paper.

6. World of Wallpaper – Congo Geometric Wallpaper Pink Holden

The Congo Geometric wallpaper, by World of Wallpaper is beautifully rendered in soft pink and green with a rose gold trellis design.  Exotic birds and lizards climb up the palm fronds for a hint of the curious.  Also available in a matte black background for an intense and dramatic room scheme.

7. Albany – Flamingos

Fun, quirky and bound to bring a smile to your face.  From the Albany Wow 2017 collection this is a steal at £18.98 a roll!  It’s a vinyl wallpaper so a bit more user friendly than most.

8. Graham & Brown – Yasuni Midnight Wallaper

Intense, moody and full of drama for a bold statement. Yasuni Midnight, by Graham & Brown is a striking tropical wallpaper in luscious shades of green and blue on a midnight base.  I liked the fact that they recommend paint shades to co-ordinate with the wallpaper, which makes matching up a lot easier.  A good tip on the review section was to darken the ends of the rolls before unwrapping them to prevent white lines on the joins when pasting.  At £40 per roll it’s in the mid price range.

9. Happy Wall – Palms Gold Cali Vibes 8 Wall Mural

A slightly different option here as Palms Gold is a mural from Happy Wall, so you order it to fit the size of your wall.  A very large design that would be amazing for a big space. Such a sense of grandeur and elegance, a pared down design in calming tones of gold and white.  But at £48 per m2 it’s not a cheap option!

10. Cole and Son – Palm Jungle

And last, but not least, Palm Jungle, by Cole & Son, in my garden room.  I love this wallpaper more each day – for its sense of calm, for its beautiful tones of green, and for its ability to bring the outdoors in.  What more can I say?  And yes, I did pay for it (at £100 per roll, not cheap), so I am completely without bias here.

So, that’s our round up of tropical wallpapers for you, from Art Deco inspired to a fantasy world.  Whether you are looking for the subtleness of waving palm fronds or a full on exotic animal experience there is plenty of designs out there.  If you like a design but not the colourway then each design is available in different colourways, which dramatically alters the look.  I hope this post inspires you invite tropical wallpapers into your home.

It’s taken me a long while to go from home office to glam and feminine bedroom but I’m nearly there, at last! Too busy with Audenza, 3 small grandchildren and emptying the old family home which has an enormous attic stuffed full of 30 years of tat – and memories, of course. I seem to have kept every picture they ever drew, every school report and every school photo. Note to self – curate! Anyway, on with the glam and feminine bedroom reveal. So, how did I go from this below…

…to this? Well, as it’s a spare bedroom I didn’t have to take into account anybody else’s viewpoint – which was a relief as it gave me full rein to do what I wanted, and I knew I wanted it light, airy and with touches of gold, with a very feminine and glamorous vibe – perfect for Audenza products then! My starting point was looking for wallpaper and, as I said to the lady in the shop when asked what I was looking for, “I will know when I see it” and ‘Espinillo’, a gorgeous gold acacia leaf design by Clarissa Hulse for Harlequin was the one. I did take a few other samples home with it, but really I knew it was the one straight off. Next was the bed – velvet, naturally as it always been my favourite fabric for its richness, but oh what colour? So many samples of so many fab colours, but the mustard velvet spoke to the wallpaper and that was it. The roman blind fabric is Extravagance by Harlequin and the colour echoes the bed. I painted the doors, ceiling, radiator and skirting boards in Wimbourne White, by Farrow and Ball, to blend with the background of the wallpaper.

I fell in love with the bedside table and sideboard as soon as I saw them – the white finish, textured fronts, and the gold handles are perfect for this bedroom. The truly difficult decision was the bedlinen, it took me weeks to make up my mind whether I wanted white or pale pink or a deep teal. In the end the beautiful barely there pink linen won the vote, and doesn’t it look fab with the mustard velvet palm tree cushions and the pink velvet ostrich cushion? The golden feather mirror was intended for the dining room but I loved it so much in here I shall just have to purchase a new one for the dining room – more decisions.

I could have gone mad with colourful accessories, but restrained myself and kept to a theme of lots of faux plants for their injection of warmth, and just a bit of colour in the vases, with a gold lamp base and bookends to continue the gold theme.

The real star of the show has to be the antique bronze palm leaf floor lamp and I’m so excited to have one, at last, after weeks of waiting. We all want one but I’m the oldie so pulled rank, and its mine!

My main worry now is that my globetrotting son has moved in for a few weeks and really, it’s not a colour scheme for a lad who (temporarily) works in a potato factory. I feel like sheeting the carpet, (in fact my lovely Marilyn blush pink velvet armchair has a sheet draped over it for now) and banning him from going in there except to sleep. I’m not sure if he appreciates my glam and feminine bedroom as he is pretty much oblivious to his surroundings, but he is enamoured of the pure linen sheets and reckons it’s the best sleep he’s ever had!

Well, what do you think? I love it. although its not finished yet as there is wall space, and that’s always a temptation. I usually have a more eclectic mix but wanted this room to be very stylized and a real Audenza bedroom and I think I’ve achieved that.

For the garden room’s revamp, I knew I wanted a lush, warm, embracing feel, and to bring the outside in, so I had the amazingly comfy sofa reupholstered in a gorgeous dark green velvet as the starting point.  And then I fell seriously in love with this ‘Palm Jungle Wallpaper’ by Cole & Son – isn’t it fabulous?  I haven’t put any pictures or wall art up as I love the wallpaper so much I don’t want detract from it, and quite like the simplicity.  You know you’re a maximalist when you class heavily patterned wallpaper as ‘simplicity’.

The majority of the furniture is original to the room (apart from the Raspberry Velvet Pouf and the Mongolian Fur Chair), but I repainted the large old dresser and a side table in ‘Mallard’ by Dulux Heritage.  What do you think to the armchair recovered in a striking patterned velvet by Designers Guild?  I debated about this for a few weeks but thought the room needed a hit of colour and pattern that wasn’t tropical inspired to give it an edge.  I always think back to my stay at Ham Yard Hotel in London and how blown away I was by the mix of pattern and colour that Kit Kemp uses in her design work.  She is a real inspiration to me for her bold and unexpected combinations, and playful interiors.  And talking of colour combinations you may wonder on the absence of garish plastic toys from this ‘playroom’?  The big dresser holds toys, but the larger pieces i.e. Isaac’s table, chairs and cooker have been put in the integral garage to be brought out when he is here as I was finding it difficult to look at them on a daily basis!

Plants, of course, are essential to the tropical feel but I am a disaster with house plants (despite being a gardener) so apart from the spider plant, which I can’t kill, they are all artificial house plants, marvellous aren’t they?  And to go with the lush greenery I wanted a bit of an animal theme running through so I braved the wise monkey statue as the focal point.  When the girl’s bought the Monkey Statue for Audenza I thought, ‘Hhmmm, I’m not sure about him!’. But now I absolutely love him for his glitzy gravitas.  All the other accessories are a mix of old and new, which I believe is the best way to decorate for a truly unique home.

Last but not least, the cushions on the sofa.  I had to have them, they had my name written all over them, and divine is my one word on the subject.  And talking of divine, my home-grown tulips give a boost of colour to my garden room, and help to bring the outside in.

Still awaiting the electric roller blinds in soft white (from John Lewis) and what a debacle that has been!  John Lewis, who pride themselves on their customer service, have been sadly lacking here.  I was told 2 weeks to make the blinds, and 10 weeks later I’m still waiting despite repeated phone calls that were not returned.  They are now ready but I have to wait 2 weeks to have them fitted!  Service?  I think not and will be buying elsewhere in future.  And still pondering the advisability of having a large and fabulous jade green rug from the ‘2 Lovely Gays’ collection for Floor Story.  I absolutely love the rug, but firstly, it’s exceedingly expensive, and secondly, the room leads straight onto the garden and is Isaac’s playroom as well, so it will take a bit of battering.  But then I’m a big believer in stuff being loved and used, so maybe! Do you think I should go for it?

Calico Wallpaper (founded by Rachel and Nick Cope) specialise in custom fit, non-repeating murals that are seriously gorgeous, but seriously pricey.  Not for the majority of us unfortunately, but just possibly worth saving your entire life for?!  Certainly something to drool over anyway, and of course, high end products filter down and are recreated in more affordable designs.  The initial collection was inspired by centuries old paper marbling techniques from Japan and Turkey.  Unique handmade patterns have been digitally enlarged to create custom murals.  Subsequent collections embody these traditions and techniques to give a truly remarkable living space.

1.   Bold wallpaper behind open shelving for just a splash of pattern. You may remember spotting this fabulous wallpaper in our sourcebook post: 17 Patterns and this is a great way to add some drama into a room without going crazy – and it’s so much cheaper, of course! Try this wherever you have open shelving – be it a bookcase, a bathroom cabinet or kitchen shelves. This image is from the kitchen of the lovely Kimberly of Swoon Worthy. Take a look as she has a fantastically inspiring blog with a lot of great ideas.

2.   Feeling adventurous? Layer up patterns – this is for the really way out and totally brave, amongst you. I absolutely love the way the pattern (called Babylon by House of Hackney) is replicated on walls, sofa and lampshade. It doesn’t have to be the same design to get this layered look – any patterns that are similar, and with the same colour tones, can achieve this intensity and help create a truly dazzling décor. You do need to keep the room relatively clutter free otherwise it becomes a mish mash that fights with the pattern.

3.   Stick to monochrome if you prefer a more contemporary cleaner look that lets the pattern speak for itself. A really sharp, graphic way to decorate that lets the wallpaper speak for itself. Another clutter free environment though otherwise it spoils the clean lines.

4.   Small spaces like bathrooms or hallways are the perfect place to use bold wallpaper. How glamorous is this cloakroom? A romantic floral extravaganza and, as a little used room, it brings a little bit of that surprise element to your home, particularly if it’s a totally different style from the rest of your décor. With rooms that aren’t actually lived in you can really go wild because you don’t have time to get bored with them as you’re only passing through.

5.   Want to be on trend? Go for a mural – the hottest new way to wallpaper that lets you create a story in your home. Do you dream of sleeping in a forest, or imagine yourself living in a crumbling French château, or just want a view of deep blue sky? Then a mural says it all. Take a look at our blogpost about mural wallpapers by Rebel Walls.

This particular design is a collaboration between 17 Patterns art director, Nosca Inc, illustrator and textile designer, Christina K and UK graffiti artist, Paris.  It’s available in 4 stunning colourways:  peach, pink, pale blue and navy.

Nosca Inc adds, “Our flamingo wallpaper is like a treasured, feathered friend. We wanted to play on ornithological patterns yet move away from the traditional treatment of feather. Our flamingos are powerful, modern and proud.”

Now, I have to point out, it’s by no means cheap. But, design like this does come at a price I’m afraid. All of their wallpaper is printed in the UK onto ethically sourced fibrous paper which has been carefully selected to heighten the wallpapers textural characteristic and flamboyant artistry. The USP of 17 Patterns is that they curate, manipulate and restructure specially-commissioned artworks into a dynamic repeat design in collaboration with the artists.

Not knowing anything about pattern repeats myself, I was particularly interested to learn that the company derives its name from the mathematical classification of a two-dimensional repetitive pattern, first proven by Evgraf Fedorov in 1891. He found that any type of repeat pattern, belongs to one of only 17 distinct symmetry groups. Which basically means that every single repeat pattern (in the world!), uses one or more of those 17 patterns. Crazy, huh?!

Not for the faint-hearted of course, but seriously, how amazing is this Jellyfish design in black? We already have a bathroom painted black, but now I want this paper and THAT towel rail. All the heart eyes for that combo. This design is also available in grey, ivory and navy which each have their own feel to them, quite different to the black shown here. So if you love the design, but the black is a little too harsh for your tastes, then do check out the other colourways.

17 Patterns also produce fabrics and cushions, and I was particularly drawn to the Leopard Love cushion in peach.

Suffice to say Anaglypta is not something I had ever considered either but after seeing a post on swoonworthy I am converted. The images are fabulous and it just goes to show how some beautiful styling can make an outdated product become desirable again.

I particularly like it painted in strong moody colours as the texture becomes far more striking and adds some glamour to a room.

It’s perfect as a dado for stairs and landings that take a lot of knocks from young children, where a quick recoat of paint instantly freshens up the walls and ideal for walls that have uneven plaster.
