How to Stick it to the Critics!
22 Jun 2012
Writing (or indeed blogging) is not only a cathartic process in itself, but I do believe that in blogging about these things, hopefully others can learn from you, be inspired by you or just generally relate to you.
How many of you have listened to others opinions of you, your work, or your life and let it bring you down? It’s human nature to want to be liked and to seek the approval of others. But what happens when you don’t get it? Generally, we (me included) tend to let what people say affect us, it’s knocks our confidence and makes us question our abilities. But what if we don’t? What if we use all of that pent up anger and upset and use it to further ourselves? Well, I think doing just that is one of the most powerful motivators that we can give ourselves.
If we never failed at anything in life, or didn’t suffer criticism from others, we wouldn’t be who we are. Every time something happens that we don’t want to, it shapes us, whether we like it or not, it changes us. The choice however, is yours whether or not you let it shape you for the better or whether you let it bring you down. Oprah Winfrey, (always on hand with her pearls of wisdom) believes just that,
“What we dwell on, is who we become.”
The most powerful way that you can respond to criticism (unless constructive, because we all need some of that sometimes) is to prove them wrong. Take that “I’ll show you” attitude and use it to make sure you get there. Then, when we do get where we want to be, being there will feel deserved, earnt and ten times better than if you’d just been handed it on a plate. Not only is achieving our dreams an incredible feeling, but so is knowing that all of those people that didn’t believe in you, were wrong.. (and even better if they happen to hear about it!).
This post is dedicated to someone that is amazing, but like us all sometimes, needs a little reminder. Believe in yourself and you can do whatever you want to.
If there’s anyone you think deserves a reminder of how great they are and you’d like to share it, please do so below and don’t forget to add in a link to them if they have one.
