5 Tips for Choosing Plant Pots for House Plants
17 Mar 2015
Spring is in the air which always makes me think about re-potting my house plants and giving them some room to grow and a new lease of life after their hibernation. It does mean having to re-think your pots though as some plants will need to move up a size. Choosing plant pots for house plants need not be a tricky business, in fact as long as the pot is big enough to get the plant into, then there’s plenty of tips and tricks to make a plant fit the pot you want. Here’s my top 5 tips:
Tip 1. If the pot is too big put pieces of polystyrene in the base to fill it out and then stand your potted plant in and fill round the top with moss. The plant can be watered without removing it as the polystyrene allows the water to drain away from the plant.
Tip 2. If you are really lucky plants fit perfectly into a plant pot in their original plastic pots (sometimes a little polystyrene is needed to fill out the bottom) and can be just taken out to water and allowed to drain before putting back in their decorative pots.
Tip 3. Think outside the box when it comes to choosing plant pots. Decorative bowls, or even vases can look fab with potted plants in them, like the Blush Hygeia Vase below. Fill the base with polystyrene, or stones if you want to add some weight. Arrange small potted plants and fill around the edges with moss. This arrangement will last a few months depending on how quickly the plants grow.
Tip 4. For plant pots without drainage holes (as most indoor ones are), where you have potted them straight into soil in the pot, you have to be very careful not to over water the plants, as without drainage it can cause root rot. Something else to be aware of is that they will need to be re-potted to something bigger as they grow.
Tip 5. Finally, if you like the shape of a plant pot but aren’t happy with the colour, then paint it! Spray paint comes in an amazing range of colours, you can even get textured paint that looks like stone, and is so quick and easy to do. Its called RUST –OLEUM.
So that’s my top 5 tips for choosing plant pots for house plants. I’d love to hear if you have any tips of your own in the comments below.
