Interiors Trends Autumn Winter 2013: The Explorer
2 Oct 2013
We’re talking interiors trends again and this time we’ll be highlighting a trend that is huge at the moment and I am sure you will be familiar with- ‘The Explorer’. If you didn’t read our last one, ‘Eccentric Chateau’ have a read here.
As the name suggests this trend is about global travel, which of course incorporates the more obvious maps and globes in their many forms- from globe bookends to whole walls of vintage maps. But this trend, being called ‘The Explorer’ is much more than just travelling and has evolved to incorporate items such as scientific instruments, bell jars and terrariums, as well as botanical influences, giving the look much more of a Christopher Columbus, rather than backpacking in Asia feel. The colours in this trend are quite muted, with beiges, creams and browns predominant. Black is also a key colour which brings the look into the 21st century and gives it a much more modern feel.
An extension of this trend that has the same vibe is the library look – reminiscent of a men’s club and works particularly well in sitting rooms, offices and of course libraries! There is very much an equine element to this, with lots of leather and club chairs. Both the library and ‘The Explorer’ are quite masculine trends, but as with any interiors trend, you can dip into them as much or a little as you like- they’re perfect for just taking elements of and using them in your existing scheme to update it. So you can have a row of bell jars with some pretty flowers in or go the whole hog and display unusual artefacts that look like original pieces from the explorer days.
